About Brasstech

The Brasstech Studio was started in order to supplement the brass teaching done in the public schools in North Texas. Its main purpose has been to prepare students for all- regions, all-areas, and all-state trials.

Students are asked to obligate themselves for a series of lessons (usually four or eight) and a specific curriculum is devised for each player’s needs.

Recently young outstanding professionals, preparing for auditions for graduate schools and professional orchestras, have joined the Studio.

Our success rate has been phenomenal (over 99%). We will also cater to individual circumstances.

Biography of Bob Gillespie

From the music of the 15th century to commercial and electronic music, Bob Gillespie covers the increasingly expanding repertoire written for and played on the trombone.

Born in Amarillo, Texas, he studied at the Eastman School of Music, Yale Summer School, Cornell Summer School, and the Juilliard School of Music, where he obtained his Master’s degree and continued his Doctoral studies. Latterly, Bob received a Licentiate in trombone from the University of South Africa with the highest marks in over 100 years (all categories).

In the United States he has been a member of the faculties at the Juilliard School, and the Universities of Delaware, Loyola, and Oklahoma. At the present time Bob is the Low Brass Instructor at Amarillo College in Amarillo, Texas. His overseas teaching appointments include positions at the Universities of the Witwatersrand, Pretoria, The Orange Free State, and Potchefstroom, in the Republic of South Africa.

During his long playing career Bob has played with the finest conductors and artists. He played Luciano Pavarotti’s Metropolitan Opera debut and performed overseas concerts with the Maestro, plus concerts with The Three Tenors, and The Three Sopranos. Some of the international conductors with whom Bob has worked include Zubin Mehta, Karl Bohm, James Levine, Sir Colin Davis, Louis Lane, Leopold Stokowski, and Leonard Bernstein.

As a trombonist Bob has been a member of some of America’s finest ensembles, and has performed with many of the world’s best orchestras. Among these are the Oklahoma City Symphony, the Eastman Wind Ensemble, the West Point Band, the Goldman Band, and the London Philharmonic. Ultimately he joined the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Mr. Gillespie subsequently resigned from the Metropolitan to become Solo Trombonist with the South African Broadcasting Corporation, where he remained for twenty five years.

For the past three decades Bob has been especially interested in solo trombone playing. At the present time he has four CD’s on the international market. His performance of Donald Erb’s Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra earned him the coveted Artes Award. This was the first time that it was awarded to a trombonist in a competition which included artists world-wide, in all classifications. The award is presented by the South African Broadcasting Corporation.

Since returning to the United States, Bob concentrates on teaching, pedagogical theories, and writing.
